Challenge to Federal Parties: In the 2008 Election, ‘Turn on the Tap’!
In the 2008 Federal Election the Polaris Institute challenges all Canadian Federal Parties to ‘Turn on the Tap’ and make their campaigns bottled water free.
In the past year Canadians have made a commitment to public water services. Across the country municipalities, schools and universities, faith-based organizations, restaurants and unions have stood up for Canada’s public water services by restricting the presence and sale of bottled water. Will the Federal Parties also commit?
In Canada, municipal water systems are among the safest and strongest in the world. Meanwhile bottled water costs more, is less regulated, consumes more energy and releases more harmful toxics into the environment than tap water (See www.insidethebottle.org ).
Shouldn’t Federal Parties support Canada’s most precious resource by publicly committing to safe and affordable public tap water?
We call on all Federal Parties to ‘Turn on the Tap’ and make their entire central campaign operations bottled water free zones. This means ensuring tap water is available rather than buying bottled water in the central Party campaign office, on the Federal Party Leaders Tour and at campaign events for the Party Leader.
Not only does committing to tap water reduce costs and protect the environment, it demonstrates support for Canada’s public water services.
In the 2008 Federal election, take the challenge and ‘Turn on the Tap’!
